On October 5, Main Library Alliance officially changed its name to Pillar Libraries, a.k.a. PILLAR (Partners in Libraries, Lending, and Resources). This new name emphasizes the organization’s role in supporting and uplifting public libraries in our region.

The app

• • • The MAIN Library Alliance (NJ) app will change its name to Pillar Libraries (NJ) in October, and you’ll see the logo on the app icon change as well. You do not need to re-download the app.

Why did Main Library Alliance change its name to Pillar Libraries (PILLAR)?

Our previous name, Main Library Alliance, was derived from an acronym, the Morris Automated Information Network (MAIN). While we’re enormously proud of our roots in Morris County, our service area has since expanded to include libraries in seven New Jersey counties: Essex, Hunterdon, Morris Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren. We’re excited for this opportunity to reintroduce ourselves with a name that represents our commitment to our member libraries from every county.

Why Pillar Libraries (PILLAR)?

We chose the name Pillar Libraries to emphasize the organization’s role in supporting and uplifting public libraries. Just as multiple pillars work together to support a structure, all of our member libraries collaborate to make the alliance strong. Libraries are pillars of their communities. Pillars are built to last, and whatever changes come our way in the years to come, the organization will persist—and so will our name.

While our name is changing on October 5, one thing never changes: our commitment to our member libraries and the communities they serve. Just as we have spent the past several decades serving you as Main, we look forward to many more years ahead as Pillar Libraries.
